MICF Review: Guy Montgomery’s Let’s All Get In A Room Together is a fun, goofy bit of storytelling (performances until 23rd April)

Guy Montgomery has this interestingly crescendo-like style of stand-up in Let’s All Get In A Room Together. It’s certainly a set full of happiness and goofiness, free from any political doom and gloom that many other comedy shows are focusing on this festival, but he can certainly be set to go on a really good story which rises to cool peak and rapturous laughter over small, trivial situations like accommodation in Melbourne town.

Montgomery has pieces of storytelling in Let’s All Get In A Room Together that is refreshingly different. It’s all well and good to see comedians stand up and give light-hearted barbs on the injustices in this world – namely the topics of Trump and Brexit, both getting a work over by many comedians in this festival – but sometimes it’s a good thing to get away from all of that and enjoy some stories about weed and sexual awakening. Montgomery delivers such stories with happy candour.

This idea of a ‘crescendo’ in his style is certainly something that is unique about Montgomery. Whether it is him getting into the flow, or getting really riled and passionate about the topic, there is a certain rhythm to his stand up where he raises his voice and seems focused enough to pull off some great pointed laughs. It was a nice bit of abundance to see a comedian control the room in this way, but it could be seen as a small makeup for the odd, seemingly random, collection of stories bundled together in this show.

But sometimes comedians can do this well if a combination of other factors in a show go well, and this is the case with Let’s All Get In A Room Together. There is an entertaining element to Montgomery’s previously mentioned rhythm that engages, and Montgomery is very well aware of such things. It’s not a wonder that he was nominated for Best Newcomer at last year’s MICF
