Comedy Review: Matt Okine – Supper Room, Melbourne Town Hall

Boy, was it nice to put a 3D human being to the voice that is Matt Okine. Over the years we have become so fond of his vocal prowess and Instagram snaps, but seeing the boy wonder himself in the flesh, staring us right in the face, was an absolute delight.

Having spoken to Okine in the lead up to his appearance at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, we had a fair idea of what to expect: anecdotes from his life over the past 12 months. Now, if you’re an avid triple j breakfast listener, then you’re up to speed on the goings on of Okine’s escapades, so we were definitely laughing with him, not at him.

Okine lives a seemingly balanced life, what with a full time job that ends at 12noon, after which he proceeds home to watch eight hours of The Food Network – episodes, he admits, to seeing numerous times. Some would say he’s living the dream, others would say he’s just a dirty crumb.

Dem LOLs were flowing all night long, with tales of his food obsession, his dilemma on whether or not to purchase a bargain (pronounced “barsjayne”) set of rolling pins, the tribulations of an ex-girlfriend stealing his money tin that easily had bulk cash in it and many a sports shaming reference.

There is no denying Okine leads a colourful existence, has a fruitful career and an adoring lady by his side, but there have been dire moments along the way. A scare with Multiple Sclerosis definitely shocked the crowd, even Okine for that matter, but what better way to find the joy in life than through difficult times.

Okine is a genuinely relatable lad, and his self-titled show is a great way to learn more about the inner workings of his humorous mind.

Matt Okine’s shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival are on until April 17 at Melbourne Town Hall but have been selling out quick, so be sure to snap up some tickets ASAP from here.
