Seated inside The Parlour at The Royal Croquet Club on the final night of the Adelaide Fringe Festival, I witness a duo get decidedly dark about the fascinating and oftentimes all-consuming culture of social media. Honor and Patrick present CULL; it’s a show of strobes and online drinking challenges. A show of YouTube vloggers and fake Facebook catch ups.
It’s a darkly funny representation of just how fucked up internet culture can be and how we as consumers, play a part even if we think we are separate from it all. The dynamic between the two is great to watch – they perform and play off each other with ease and even though it’s a small venue with a harder Sunday night crowd, the twosome rock with the waves and do things brilliantly.
There are moments where both Honor and Patrick shine solo, each displaying wicked and manic flair but then toning things back when needed to emphasise the more nuanced elements of the show’s narrative. We’re left, as an audience, feeling slightly confused, but eager to watch on to see just what else happens.
That, as a Fringe punter, is what I want from my shows out. Those are the ones that stand apart.
