WA’s Jazz by the Bay goes global with international performers in its fifth year

Jazz by the Bay, WA’s annual Jazz festival, has just announced the first of its scheduled acts, which will include several international acts for the first time in its 5-year history. The festival is a celebration for Jazz lovers from Perth and beyond, and also includes local food and wine experiences.

This year, the event will take place from Friday 2nd June, through to Monday 5th June 2017, and is located in Busselton, Dunsborough and Margaret River regions.

Whilst the full program hasn’t been released yet, festival organisers have announced at least some exciting international acts. London-based Karen Lane returns to her hometown to perform cool and cruisy tunes, from jazz standards to Bossa Nova. She’s worked with some of the UK’s best musicians , in some of London’s premier jazz clubs. She’s also released 5 critically-acclaimed albums. Jazz by the Bay favourite Cathrine Summers also returns in 2017, and will be sure to wow audiences with her charisma, on-stage charm and unmatched vocal range. Her shows sell out regularly at the event.

In addition to this, celebrated Cuban musicians Lazaro Pompa (trumpet), Pablo Calzado (drums) and Camila Cortina Bello (piano) will perform alongside Perth ‘s own Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys at the famed Piano Box Jazz Bar with music inspired by Buena Vista Social Club, as well as popular faves from Coldplay, Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Elvis and more, making their shows an engaging night of Latin rhythms with pop classics.

With the increasing popularity of Jazz by the Bay, the event will now run for four days. Festival Director Cindy Wiese is pleased with this growth in the festival. “We’re shaping up to have more than 20 artists performing in about the same number of venues across the region”, she said. “Jazz by the Bay turns the heat up in winter, gets visitors and locals out of hibernation and into some cozy venues to enjoy cool jazz. I’m really excited about the way this year’s program is already looking”.

Jazz by the Bay is scheduled over the June long weekend, with a mixture of Free and ticketed events. Performances range from indoor to outdoor venues, and cater for all jazz tastes, from “cool cats” to scatters to jivers.
