Taking place over three nights this week, Melbourne’s Monash University’s Caulfield campus is set to be the framework of a new art project, Under The Wire, from October 13-15.
As part of the Melbourne Festival program, Under The Wire takes advantage of the collision of architectural style and undergoing construction, forming the backdrop for a series of projections and sound. Curated by James Hewison, Head of Film Programs at ACMI, the event will expertly combine film, image, light and sound – a venture from an orthodox display.
The event will see works from Super 8mm specialist and tester of limits, Rick Charnoski.
Australia’s very own prominent documentary filmmaker, Amiel Courtin-Wilson; and composer of haltingly ominous cinematic images, Bill Morison.
Sound will play over the projections, curated and composed by the Australian Art Orchestra’s Peter Knight and James Savage.
Under The Wire provides a platform for moving images and sounds that may not necessarily have a home. According to Hewison, the project in a way is “off the grid”, as a lot of the material being used wasn’t destined to end up in traditional films, and in turn, gave it a place to belong.
“What art is able to do, is give it freedom,” said Hewison.
Two of Charnoski’s works will be featured during the event, both of which are observational pieces. One features footage from 9/11, and the other is Richard Serra at LACMA. This clip is a sly, voyeuristic observation of famous sculptor Richard Serra putting together a sculpture in New York, and another observational work of footage from 9/11 – which has yet to reach audience’s eyes despite his efforts trying.
“I had these films, but no where to play them. We tried Cannes, Rotterdam and Melbourne film festival… all three said no,” said Charnoski.
“The right place for it to be shown is in a place like this. A public projection, as part of an art piece.”
The event will allow audiences to experience a more personal opportunity to interact with the works – they can form their own grid – as they map their own course through each of the sites.
Under The Wire is a free event that is held at Monash University, Caulfield Campus (MADA and MUMA Precinct). It will run each night from 5pm for food, beverages, and live music, with the exhibition starting from 7:30-10pm each of the three nights.
