The Events is making its Australian premiere at Belvior Street Theatre this May

A brilliant play that was highly commended at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival, The Events is now set to make it’s debut in Australia. The premiere will see Catherine McClements return to the Belvior Street stage, where she will be accompanied by Sydney’s community choirs to present a show intertwined with theatre and music.

The Events has seen Scottish playwright David Greig, who previously worked on Midsumma (A Play with Songs), which toured throughout Australia in 2012, collaborate with director Clare Watson, who was nominated for Best Director of a Play in 2015 for her work with What Rhymes with Cars and Girls.

The production is based around the story of a young man who enters a local hall where a choir is practicing and takes fire with a semi-automatic. The plot follows the characters of Claire, who is a reverend and the choir director, and this young unidentified, man as she releases her inner fears, rage and hope, while the young man acts as the voice of an alienated, lost generation.

The Events is performed with a different choir for each showing, which will see choirs from all over Sydney take the stage. The performance will be running from May 12 – June 12 at the Upstairs Theatre at the Belvior Street Theatre. Following its time at Belvior Streer, The Events will be showing at The Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne from June 21 – July 10.
