Stanton Welch’s Romeo and Juliet is heading to Melbourne for an exclusive season

Joining The Australian Ballet‘s 2016 program is Stanton Welch‘s Romeo and Juliet, which will be presented by Houston Ballet. Debuting in Australia, and following a huge world premiere in 2015, this remake of the unmistakably beautiful love story will be coming to the Arts Centre Melbourne for an exclusive season performance. The Houston Ballet will be touring to Melbourne with a cast of 91 crew members and performers, and will be accompanied on stage by the Victorian Orchestra.

The production was created by Melbourne born Stanton Welch, who is currently the Artistic Director of the Houston Ballet, as well as acting Resident Choreographer of The Australian Ballet. The ballet follows the traditional Romeo and Juliet story of love and tragedy, while adding elements of humour and a more modern feel.

On the production, Welch stated “I am very proud and excited to bring my two homes together. Twenty five years ago I started choreographing in Melbourne and now I get to return with one of my most recent works, Romeo and Juliet”.

Collaborating with Sergei Prokofiev’s stunning score and world renowned designer Roberta Guidi di Bagno, the production has been described by the Houston Press as “another treasure to add to the Houston Ballet story repertoire”. It will running from 30 June to July 9 at the Arts Centre Melbourne.
