Named for Australian playwright Patrick White, the award is presented to an original, unproduced play. The winning playwright will receive $7500, and have the opportunity to work with a director and actors, building towards a rehearsed public reading of the play on May 20th.

The 2016 shortlist features five works chosen from 131 anonymously submitted entries:

  • Near Life by Jane Bodie
  • Kin by Neil Levi
  • Between the Streetlight and the Moon by Melita Rowston

This year’s judges include Polly Rowe (Sydney Theatre Company Literary Manager), Kate Mulvany (playwright and actor, and Patrick White Playwrights’ Fellow 2014), Hannie Rayson (playwright), and Declan Greene (director and playwright).

The same night will also see the announcement of the 2016 Patrick White Fellowship, offered to an established playwright in recognition of their work in the past four years. Winners receive $12500, as well as a commission from the Sydney Theatre Company.
