Following David Bowie’s death in 2016, internationally renowned composer Warren Willis felt compelled to write a musical. He wanted to create something that celebrated the music and captured the lives of both Bowie and Freddie Mercury, two of the UKS most beloved performers. And so was born Bowie & Mercury Rising.
Premiering in his hometown of Melbourne, the unique musical sees Willis returning to Chapel off Chapel to deliver the story of a young actress searching for hope after the death of one of her most cherished idols (Bowie).
Re-imaging such classics as, ‘Space Oddity,’ ‘Life on Mars,’ and ‘We are the Champions,’ the production is based on the stories surrounding the much-loved stars. “It is by no means a tribute show, but rather a bravura theatrical experience,” says Willis.
Melbourne-based performer Thando Sikwila, who made her professional theater debut in StageArt’s Dreamgirls in 2015, will star alongside Willis and Melbourne dancer Jessica Mortlake to bring the production to life.
Having worked as a musical director and composer for The West End and Broadway over the past 30 years, and with more than 50 productions under his belt, Willis is no stranger to the stage.
During his time working in London Willis worked closely with Bowie’s musical director Mike Garson, Queen lead guitarist Brian May and Freddie Mercury’s boyfriend, actor Peter Straker.
Garson has praised the creative flair Willis brings to Bowie & Mercury Rising. “I was very impressed with Warren’s extremely creative variations on David’s Heroes,” says Garson, “he is one very talented gentleman.”
