It’s been a historic week for the LGBTQI community with an almighty YES vote from 61.6% of Australians who believe same-sex marriage should be legalised. There’s no denying it’s been tough time for all those involved, and it’s hard not to reflect on the events leading up to the result but standing together in strength and solidarity now means and says so much about who we are as a nation.
The result comes at no better time. Midsumma Festival 2018 is getting closer and what a time to celebrate. At its core, Midusmma provides a platform for diversity, ideas, cultural connectedness and a sense of belonging. The 2018 festival is going to be the biggest yet with three weeks of celebrations that will make you smile, laugh and move you by celebrating culture.
With over 100 venues involved, the festival is 40% larger than last year and incredibly, 50% of the events on the line-up are free, meaning you have no excuse not to get along and support our arts community. Midsumma is renowned for putting its best foot forward, and sharing the talents and creativity of our local artists with the world.
As always, the festival program is jam-packed with some outstanding works but there are some notable ones which you need to know about. The Midsumma Carnival will kick things off on Sunday January 14th at Alexandra Gardens with vibrancy, music, colour and just the most wonderful of people. Then of course the 23rd annual Midsumma Pride March will return to Fitzroy St in St Kilda on Sunday January 28th, with registrations closing very soon. To celebrate the beautiful queer youth community there will be a Midsumma Youth Spectacular on Tuesday January 23rd where you can expect lots of glitter and a whole heap of fun.
If you want to be a part of the wonder, then registrations are now open for volunteers. To check out the full line-up of events head here, and for some early bird specials with 15% off you might want to head here.
