Five new Australian plays, eight world premieres and a host of international guests artists are set to make Malthouse Theatre’s 2017 season their most exciting yet.
Speaking of the recently announced line up, Artistic Director Matthew Lutton said: “Malthouse Theatre aims to spark debate and interrogation with the theatre we create and 2017 will be no different. The 2017 season presents new productions that revolt against the status quo, invite us to seek out empathy in unexpected places, and celebrate the matriarchy.”
Highlights include:
- An adaptation of The Elephant Man, reuniting director Lutton and writer Tom Wright, the team behind 2016’s Picnic at Hanging Rock.
- A new production of Michael Gow‘s Away, presented in conjunction with Sydney Theatre Company.
- Audiences will don headseats and journey to the Amazon in The Encounter, presented by UK theatre company Complicite.
- Tom Waits and William S. Burroughs’ rarely performed Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets will see Victorian Opera team up with Malthouse Theatre.
- Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again by UK playwright Alice Birch will have its Australian premiere during the season. Starring Elizabeth Esguerra, Ming-Zhu Hii, and Belinda McClory, the piece is described as “high octane feminist theatre.”
- The world premiere of ANTI GRAVITY will bring together visual artist Ho Tzu Nyen and Chunky Move artistic director Anouk van Dijk, presenting six dancers transforming from heavenly creatures to terrestrial warriors.
Lutton said: “We invite Melbournians in 2017 to debate their established views and how they could revolt against the status quo, and offer stories that inspire compassion and empathy amongst the murk of the 21st century.”
