John Patrick Shanley’s acclaimed Doubt: A Parable to recieve a limited season in Sydney

Sydney is about to enjoy a new production of John Patrick Shanley’s multi award-winning drama Doubt: A Parable, with a limited season due to kick off at the Old Fitz Theatre in Woolloomooloo from 10th May until 3rd June.

Originally staged off-Broadway, the play transferred to Broadway in 2005 and sustained 550 performances over almost 18 months. The play won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play and was turned into an Academy Award-nominated film starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Viola Davis, all of whom received nominations for their performances.

The play is set amidst the turbulence of the 1960s. Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal and stern Catholic nun, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students. An accusation sets the stage for a powerful clash of authority, tradition, responsibility and faith. Where do you draw the line between belief and suspicion? Between scandal and moral certainty. And when does the battle for truth turn into a witch hunt?

Apocalypse Theatre Company will be presenting the show in association with Red Line Productions. Dino Dimitriadis (ASYLUM, Construction of the Human Heart) will direct the production, with a cast including Charmaine Bingwa (Deadly Women, A Snowflake on the Tongue of Oberon), Damian de Montemas (Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities – AFI Award winner, The Secret Life of Us, Home and Away), Belinda Giblin (Blonde Poison – Sydney Theatre Award nominee, The Turquoise Elephant, Sons and Daughters) and Matilda Ridgway (A Doll’s House – Sydney Theatre Award winner, Cock – STA nominee, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant – STA nominee).

While this production is taking place, The New Fitz will also play The Wind in the Underground by Sam O’Sullivan – which was inspired by Doubt: A Parable. You can enjoy that from 23 May – 3 June, directed by Lucy Clements. Shows start at 6:30pm Tues-Sat and at 4:30pm on Sun and run for approximately 40mins with no interval.
