Unplug your curling wands and get ready for the ride of you lives darlings- we’re going bush! A decade since its dazzling premiere, hit musical Priscilla: Queen of the Desert is returning to Australian stages in January 2018 with even more glitz and glamour then before. Having spent the last ten years frolicking around the world, visiting destinations like London, Tokyo, Sao Paulo and Manila, the critically acclaimed production makes its way back to where it all started.
Original Director Simon Phillips is back at the helm, delivering a dazzling array of more than 500 award-winning costumes, 200 headdresses and a non-stop hit parade of dance floor favourites- including ‘I Will Survive,’ and ‘It’s Raining Men.’
Fabulous Drag Queens Bernadette, Mitizi and Felicia first rode their silver bus to Alice Springs in Stephan Elliott’s 1993 cult film, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, starring Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce. Based on the Oscar-winning film, the fish out of water musical delivers a story about mate ship, determination and self-discovery.
“Behind the sparkles, feathers and camp feel-good factor is a story that remains as relevant as it did when the film was released 20 odd years ago with a message of hope, tolerance and acceptance,” says Director Simon Phillips. “It’s a joy to be back in the driver’s seat for the homecoming of this bona fide national treasure.”
The production makes its way back to Australia with a number of awards under its belt, including five Italian Musical Theatre Awards, five Greenroom awards, a Tony and an Oliver.
The production kicks off at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in January, before touring to Sydney Capitol Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre and Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre.
Melbourne tickets go on sale on Monday August 14th via Ticketmaster. A waitlist for other cities can be found at PriscillaTheMusical.com.au.
