Danielle Baynes to ride her Bicycle into the Old Fitz Theatre

After a sell out season at the Adelaide Fringe, Danielle Baynes, with Lies, Lies and Propaganda, is set to bring her one woman play, Bicycle, to the Old Fitz Theatre, Woolloomooloo, later this month.

A thematic mash-up made up of one part Gothic horror and one part celebration of a female “first”, Bicycle follows a Victorian Englishwoman who is gifted a bicycle by a mysterious Transylvanian count, on the condition that she attend a midnight supper with him.  Writer and performer Danielle Baynes, musican Pip Dracakis, and, of course, a bicycle take to the stage, in a play about conquering fears, parting legs, and the unexpected turns life can take after dining with a monster.

“I wanted to write a play celebrating women in history who were the ‘first to…’ something.” Baynes says. “Often that something in our modern context is so commonplace we forget that at one time someone fought for the right to do it. The advent of the bicycle meant women suddenly had the freedom to hop on a metal horse, leave their houses (often domestic prisons) and ride anywhere they liked. It courted controversy, changing the way women dressed and behaved in public.”
