Circus Oz launch a rock opera season featuring Europop duo Otto & Astrid

Circus Oz are mixing things up in their upcoming season by creating circus rock opera performance, The Strange and Spektakulär Lives of Otto & Astrid. Artist Director Rob Tannion has brought Otto & Astrid from the Berlin-based band Die Roten Punkte onboard to lead the instrumentals. The duo will perform alongside the evocative Circus Oz acrobats.

A sneak peak of The Strange and Spektakulär Lives of Otto & Astrid will be held at the Meat Market in North Melbourne from the 6 to the 9 of December 2017.

The rock opera will trace the backstory of squabbling siblings and their turbulent rise to become the (self-proclaimed) best rock band in the world. Acrobats Matt Wilson, Kyle Raftery and April Dawson will join the dysfunctional duo to create a combination of characters, including bakers, a train driver, a golden angel, a tyrannical aunt and uncle, a tap dancing dog and bohemian revellers on the streets of Berlin.

“Preheat ideas to 200 degrees,” Circus Oz Artistic Director Rob Tannion said, as he reveals the ingredients to a circus rock opera performance.

“Mix a large scoop of Otto & Astrid with a big dollop of Circus Oz acrobatics. Fold in original Die Roten Punkte rock’n’roll songs. Beat with humour, shadow puppetry and cheesy choreography until lumps appear.

“Sprinkle in some dramaturgical magic dust and pop it in the oven for six weeks. Remove the strange yet spectacular show with oven gloves. Glaze with lights and smoke. Taste test at the Meat Market.”
