A new $100,000 grant is bringing art, science and sport closer together

A new grant of $100,000 delivered by The Copyright Agency Cultural Fund hopes to develop a method for measuring the influence of crowd behaviour on AFL/NRL player performance over a period of three years.

Artist Baden Pailthorpe, whose focus is on the relationships between technology, power and culture, will work alongside Aaron Coutts, a Professor of Sport and Exercise at the University of Technology in Sydney, to conduct research. Together they aim to develop a method for quantifying the influence of crowd behaviour on athletes.

The grant, made to the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) as part of their 2016 Cultural Fund, gives artists such as Baden, the unique opportunity to collaborate with scientists and contribute to Australia’s growing reputation for creativity and innovation.

“The Cultural Fund is dedicated to supporting innovation in the Australian creative industries,” says Copyright Agency’s CEO Adam Suckling. “The Synapse Program is a perfect example as it offers artists unique in-situ access to the leading-edge researchers, technology and professional networks required to bring their creations to life.”

The Synapse program has enabled unique collaborations between over a hundred artists and scientists since its establishment in 2004.

“What sets Synapse apart from similar programs is that we work to match and seed new collaborations that will create outcomes and reveal new research learnings within the various industries,” says Director of the Australian Network for Art and Technology Vicki Sowry.

“As the early adopter of the Australian arts sector, ANAT does the trial and error R&D, as we scan the horizon and identify opportunities for artists, often in non-traditional settings.”

The Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund is now open for Round Two 2017, with grants available for organizations running projects such as the Synapse program. Round Two Applications close October 9th 2017.
