Australia does not tread quietly during the winter, with major events and festivals all over the country through the month of June. Here’s just seven unmissable events, festivals and productions not to miss around the country this month!

Dark Mofo (Tasmania)

Embracing the darkness of the southern winter solstice, Dark Mofo transforms the city of Hobart into a beacon of shadows. Featuring artists from around the world, the annual pilgrimage delves into centric-old winter rituals exploring links between ancient and contemporary through large scale art, food, film, music, light and noise.

Now in its fifth year, this year’s program promises to be just as tantalising as its predecessors.  With a large selection of weird and wonderful to choose from, you’re bound to find something to peak your dark curiosities. Highlights include The City of Hobart Dark Mofo Winter Feast, Ogoh-Ogoh Parade, the Nude Solstice Swim and the Dark Playground.

Melbourne International Jazz Festival

The Melbourne International Jazz Festival is celebrating a massive 20 years by serving up one of their biggest line ups to date, with up to 500 artists from across the globe participating in over 120 events! Victoria will be flourishing with local and international icons such as the legendary Kenny Baron trio and Grammy Award winner Dianne Reeves. Playing in some of Melbourne’s most iconic venues the line-up has something for everyone.

Adelaide Cabaret Festival

Spanning over 16 days, offering a mixture of music, satire, comedy and musical theater, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is the biggest of its kind! Now in its 16th year, Artistic Directors Ali McGregor and Eddie Perfect have curated a massive line up of performances that are sure to get audiences excited. The never ending list of highlights includes global sensations such as Matilda, Briefs and Alan Cummings.

Red Line Production’s SLUT (Sydney)

Presented by Red Line Productions in association with Edgeware Forum and Rue De La Rocket, SLUT is the exploration of the sexuality of young women in contemporary society. Written by Patricia Cornelius, the story follows a teen named Lolita and her girl gang as they wonder down the murky path of sexual empowerment and dangerous sexualisation. The performance tells a heartbreaking tale about women growing into their bodies, owning their bodies and their bodies being owned by others. Tickets are $25 and the show will be running from June 13 to June 24.

Sierra Boggess (East Coast Tour)

Award winning music theater star Sierra Boggess brings her concert tour to Australia for the first time. Having played leading roles on Broadway and the West End, including as Chrstine in Phantom of the Opera and Ariel in The Little Mermaid, she has already wowed audiences across the globe with her dazzling voice. Now making her debut in Australia, the Broadway star will be visiting Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Sierra will be joined on stage by Brian Hertz (Musical Director) and renowned cellist Summer Boggess.

Todrick Hall in Straight Outta OZ (National Tour)

Todrick Hall brings a new twist to L. Frank Baum’s classic creation, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with over 20 original songs delivering the stage show like you’ve never seen it before. The Broadway Actor, MTV star and American Idol Finalist comes together with his talented crew to tell the tale of Hall’s adventure from his small town in Texas, to the big Emerald City lights of “Oz Angeles.” The show follows the Hollywood hopeful as he tries to succeed in the business, dodging falling houses, wicked witches and the infamous, “Poppyrazzi.”

1984 (National Tour)

In a world where an invasive government keep a spitefully watchful eye on its citizens, Winston Smith thinks a thought, starts a diary and falls in love. The adaptation of George Orwell’s  masterpiece 1984 was a smash hit on The West End, and now it’s making its way back to Australia.  With a brand new Australian cast, directors Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillian bring to life one of the 20th Century’s greatest novels. The production will play major seasons in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Perth over a four month period.
