Five Reasons To See Kinky Boots in Sydney (Now Playing at the Capitol Theatre)

Kinky Boots stalked onto the stage last night for its Sydney Opening Night and we loved every sparkling moment!

If you’re not quite convinced you need to see this dazzling musical yet, here are our five reasons why you really ought to strap on your heels and get to it-

  1. The absolute party that Kinky Boots is on stage

Start to finish Kinky Boots is non-stop, from energetic catchy tunes to emotionally upheaving ballads. The cast genuinely seem to be enjoying themselves just as much as their delighted audience, what with all the fun that just seemingly bubbles out from the stage. There are big smiles and sneaky winks and all kinds of wit and it’s really just such an enjoyable show. And when you get to the finale? Just try and stay in your seat.

  1. And speaking of a catchy tune…

We all know True Colours, Time After Time and we most definitely know that Girls Just Want To Have Fun, but Cyndi Lauper has created a whole host of beautiful new works here that just beg you to love them and keep them playing in your head for days. The opening number “The Most Beautiful Thing” starts of the mood perfectly, then there’s that anthem “Land of Lola” (BOW DOWN BEFORE LOLA), those tear jerkers like “Hold Me In Your Heart” and that darn earworm “Step One”. “EVERYBODY SAY YEAH” if you can’t get the soundtrack out of your head. YEAHHHHHHHHHHH-EAHHH-YEAHHHHHH!

  1. But what about the story?

My friend, Kinky Boots has you sorted here too. It’s a wonderful warm-hearted tale equal parts sequins and important values, and it manages to really drive home those ever-important lessons: learn to accept others for who they are and learn to accept and love yourself for who you are.

  1. And the characters?

The story is written such that it gives you the opportunity to really become attached to its small town characters and their big hearts. Through dialogue and song we get particularly meaningful insights into Lola (Callum Francis) and Charlie (Toby Francis), the weight of parental expectations and their struggles in finding themselves. The support of the people around them also plays a heavy role, and the Angels are of course nothing short of fabulous.

The best part though? The friendship that develops between Lola and Charlie and how it touches all those around them (and us! Anyone else shed some tears during Charlie’s phonecall?)

And finally, if you need any further reasons to see Kinky Boots in Sydney, let it be this-

  1. CALLUM FRANCIS

Because holy 6-inch heels this boy is a KNOCKOUT. His performance was perfection- every single note hit, every single move nailed, every single hairflick, dazzling smile, swivel of hips like Shazam! And bam! He had the crowd in his perfectly manicured fingertips and the moment he stepped out for “Hold Me In Your Heart” the audience well and truly already had him there.
